I E filed a return for my sister and her deceased husband ( 10/26/2021). It was accepted by IRS. I just received a letter from IRS re identity.

I cannot use the website idverify.irs.gov as I am not the tax payer. I am the tax payer's POA ( she is in hospice).

I have tried to reach the IRS by phone and have never gotten through.

I could could complete and mail a 2848 and attach my POA, but I am not confident that they would hook up with my sister's return.

Any suggestions as to what to do??

The best way to get direction on this situation would be to contact the IRS directly.  We have reports from here that it is easier to get through when the IRS opens in the morning.

IRS: 800-829-1040

Hours: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM, local time

Monday-Friday

  • Listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • First, choose your language. Press 1 for English.
  • Then do NOT choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
  • Instead, press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."  It should then transfer you to an agent.

Or, you can visit your local IRS Office

Heather:

The refund is in the bank. Cannot reach IRS. Should I just wait to hear from them again??

Since this is in regards to a POA, you will need to speak with them directly on this.  Please try the suggestions above.
