So I've been wondering why my 2020 return is still pending after over a month. The IRS website and phone say it's still being processed. However, I'm pretty sure I know why it's late, I forgot to add a 1099-R distribution. My 1099-R is for a straight roll-over and I know it would not change my taxes/refund but I've learned this is still required to be included. The distribution code is "G".
Question is should I try to amend my return while the IRS says it's still processing my original return? I think this is the only possible error and most likely.

NEVER EVER amend a return that has not been fully processed. The missing 1099-R income will not be caught for another year or 2 so your return is not being held up for that and you have 3 years to amend the return so be patient while the IRS plows thru the millions of returns that piled in this past month.
I doubt that is why your filing is still being processed. The IRS is seriously backlogged due to all the new tax laws and extra stimulus filings, as well as unprocessed 2019 returns left over from the COVID shutdown. Lots of other folks are still waiting some as long as 8 weeks), so please continue to be patient.
Personally, I would not amend at this point. The IRS will eventually catch up with that 1099- R, but it will have no effect on the return.

Thank you!
So once it's been processed and assuming I get my refund I should probably still amend to add this info right?
Correct ... amend after the original return is fully processed and you have your original refund in hand .... or be ready to explain the error in about 2 years when the CP2000 notice arrives.
