Edited: The IRS is now accepting e-filed returns for the 2016 tax year; however, some state Department of Revenue's have not yet begun to accept e-filed returns.

The IRS will start processing returns on 1/23/2017.  They may accept/reject earlier, but processing will be delayed until the date they "open for business".

Just so you are aware, the IRS will not begin processing e-filed returns until 1/23/2017 and refunds for 8 out of 10 people are expected within 21 days of acceptance or the beginning of processing.  If you claimed the Earned Income Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, the IRS is legally not allowed to release the refund until February 15, 2017.
