Today I went IRS website to check the status of my amended return for 2019. And the system shows the following notification:

"Your amended return was received on April 13, 2020. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please call 800-829-0582, extension 623, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return."

I tried to call the number with the extension they provided, but no representative answered the phone because of the extremely high volume of calls.

Should I continue to call the number or just wait?

    Just wait.  Amended returns take a long time to process.  And you are lucky it's even showing up at all.

    In normal times it takes up to 16 weeks or more to process an Amended 1040X return.  But these are not normal times.

    Sorry the IRS has limited staff due to Covid-19.  They just started opening the mail in June that's been stacking up. Back in March the IRS closed their processing centers and stopped processing mailed tax returns.  An IRS spokesperson recently said that they have about 11 million pieces of unopened mail.  So you have to keep waiting.

    I’m having the same issue with my 2021 amendment? Any suggestions

    @Lanroxan

    Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

    Hey I'm just curious what why was the reason that they said that you had to call? Because I'm getting the same thing and I filed my amended return and it was accepted April 15th and I mean it's August 19th We've been regularly checking our amended return status and saw the message to call with no reason why??

    @Outlawzlady - there was no reason; and I've read the agents don't know any more than is on the website.  figure 9-12 months to wait from the time you submitted the amendment until it is processed.

    @Dark_rabbi

    You would assume that the 2019 amended return would be processed first  but the system doesn't necessarily work that way.  The 2020 or 2021 amended return could process first even if all of the were sent in at the same time.

    You have to understand that all the amended returns are not processed by the same person or even in the same office  or even in the same state so whichever office got the 2019 amendment to process is not doing so in the same time frame as the other tax years.
