TT 2021 does not find 2020 return

I am using the same computer as last year. I installed TT 2021. When I try to import last year's return, it gives me the message The document "ourname20" could not be opened. The volume "no name" couldn't be mounted. Mount the volume and try opening the document again.

I really did not want to have to re-do everything from last year. I see the file on my computer under the TT 2020, but it won't open in that version either.

You need to transfer (not open or import)  from  the .tax2020 file (not a PDF) and the .tax2020 file must be on your hard drive not a removable storage medium.

When using the 2021 TurboTax software you will be starting a New Tax Return and Transferring the 2020 tax data to the 2021 tax return.  So you only need to browse to the location where you copied the 2020 tax data file to transfer to the 2021 tax return.

thank you, When I click find 2020 file at the start of the 2021 software, it does not locate it. I can only see the name of it in the 2020 software and get the error message I typed above.

What is the file extension of your 2020 file that produces that error?   The data file from 2020 should end in *.tax2020.   And as Critter asked, is it on your hard drive and not a flash/thumb drive or external storage?

Are you using a Mac or Windows PC?    I'm suspicious that you are using a Mac, but I don't know for sure.  If you are, then I can try to find someone using a Mac to help you.
