Roth IRA overcontribution

I opened a Roth IRA account in early 2026 and made contributions for tax year 2025.  After I filed my 2025 taxes I realized I contributed too much and have done a Return of Excess from my broker.  My question is since the deposit and withdrawal both happened in 2026 will the taxes for the additional income be applied to my 2026 tax return or do I need to file an amended 2025 return?

Given that you already filed 2025 without reporting any attributed earnings, your Roth contribution was for 2025 so the earnings are for 2025, and if positive, you have to do an amended 2025 tax return

Thanks-however I didn’t set up the Roth account or contribute until March, 2026. I applied them to my Roth 2025 contribution allotment.

your Roth contribution was for 2025 so the earnings are for 2025.The removal deadline is Tax Day.

You must have a) filed by Tax Day, or b) received an extension of time to file after Tax Day to have access to the  Oct 15 removal deadline which is not yet passed
