non filer stimulus

My parents claimed me depended on the non-filer payment info for the stimulus check. Now I can't change it. But on the IRS website, it says IRS will use this information to complete the 1040 form. So, to cancel me as a dependent from that non-filer information, do my parents need to file 1040-X?

did you file your own 2019 tax forms yet?

    has it been processed?

have you received your own stimulus payment yet ?

Yes, I filed mine by saying someone can claim me as a dependent. But I need to change it and I was amending my tax return. Because of the non-filer for the stimulus check of my parents where they put me as a dependent, I am not sure if I can change to non-dependant. I am afraid that the IRS will reject my amended tax file.

    yes, this is complicated

    1) amend both tax returns (the non-filer is really a simplified tax return).  will take at least 4 months for that to be processed and no guidance from the IRS whether they will immediately turn around and process the stimulus after processing the amendment

    2) ... are you willing to wait for the stimulus until you file your 2020 tax return?  no need to amend this year and it'll work itself out next year

    • The stimulus payments are really based on your 2020 tax return (income, dependents, etc).
    • The IRS is using either 2018 or 2019 – whatever is available  - to ESTIMATE that payment
    • When you file next year there will be a “settle up” section on the tax return.
    • If you are due more stimulus (and this would include where you simply never received it), you will receive it through the 2020 tax filing as an additional refund
    • If you received too much stimulus (not the issue here), by law , you are not required to return it
