IRS unable to located return

I believe that I must resubmit my 2025 tax return.  Filed in Feb 2026 and still haven’t gotten my refund.  Called IRS’s attendant and the “where’s my refund?” procedure responds, “unable to located return”.  Can’t get out of the automated phone attendant’s loop to get a hold of rep for a refund trace. Any suggestions on how to proceed or get ahold of person a IRS?

You can reach a live representative by calling the main IRS individual assistance line at 1-800-829-1040 between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM local time, Monday through Friday, or by checking your IRS Individual Online Account to see if the return has posted before attempting to resubmit.

    Do Not Resubmit Yet

    • Avoid duplicate filing: Do not mail or e-file another 2025 tax return right away. Submitting a second identical return while the first is still unlocated or delayed can freeze your account further and cause a lengthy processing backlog.
    • Verify online first: Log into your IRS Individual Online Account using ID.me to check your Tax Records or Transcripts for the 2025 tax year. If a transcript shows "No tax return filed," the IRS has not processed your submission from February 2026.

How to Get a Live Person on the Phone

    • Call the IRS line: Dial 1-800-829-1040.
    • Navigate the menu prompts:
      1. Select your language preference (Option 1 for English, Option 2 for Spanish).
      2. Press 2 for "Personal Income Tax".
      3. Press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
      4. Press 3 for "all other questions," then 2 for "all other questions".
      5. When prompted for an SSN or EIN, do not enter it. After failing to enter it twice, the system will redirect you to a menu for human assistance.
    • Call early: Call right at 7:00 AM local time when phone lines open to minimize long hold times.

    Alternative Ways to Get Help

    • Contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service: If you are facing severe financial hardship because your refund is missing and you cannot get through to the IRS, you can reach the independent Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) at 1-877-777-4778 for assistance

The IRS has changed the telephone prompts.

The keypad sequence you’re posting has not worked for three year, if not longer.
