Why Your Refund Might Be Delayed

    • Standard Mailing Wait Times: If you filed Form 8379 by itself after your original return was already processed, the official timeline is 8 weeks. If you mailed it with a paper tax return or an amended return (Form 1040-X), the official IRS processing window jumps to 14 to 20 weeks.
    • Manual Verification: One point of agreement among users on Facebook is that processing times can take several months because the IRS has to manually verify how income, withholding, and credits are split between you and your spouse.
    • Missing Documents: If you forgot to attach copies of W-2s, W-2Gs, or 1099s showing federal withholding for both spouses, the IRS will experience delays processing your form.
    • Alabama Allocation Rules: Because Alabama is a common-law state (not a community property state), the IRS must allocate income and deductions exactly as if you and your spouse had filed separate returns, which can sometimes add a layer of review.

That IS request can delay refund 6 months or more because things need to be checked out manually.
