I sent my return and had to pay. I automatically set the payment to execute on April 14th. The payment was executed. I sent them 2130 and it cleared on the 14th. I now got a letter saying they recalculated my return because of the child tax credit I paid back, my situation changed I shouldn't get a child tax credit, and the letter says I owe 1630 plus 2 buck interest. from the 15th til the letter date.

I paid on time and by their calculation, I now overpaid 500 dollars. Can't get through on the phone, my online account says 0.00. How do you go about getting the 500 back?

    Yes I know the website, there is no information about overpayment.

    I think the 1630 you need to pay is probably in addition to the first tax due amount 2130 you already paid.  You need to pay 1630 more.  Because if they took off the Child Tax Credit you would owe more not less.

    no, they clearly show the calculation.

    my calculation(Turbotaxes) was 8453 taxes owed their(IRS) calculation was 7953.

    paid 6323 and owed 2130. They reduced my taxes owed to 1630. I have access to my current IRS balance which shows 0.00. The issue seems to be the timing between when the letter was printed and sent and the payment made. I have been able to confirm I don't own anything. IRS makes confirming numbers and paying them easy, getting it back, they make no concession to do so.

    @redfox435cat

    if you go to IRS.gov and open your account, or request  your Record of Account to be mailed to you,

    you should see that you have a credit of $-500.

    Eventually that money will be refunded to you.

    do not file an amended return or you will wait a very long time for that money.

    Well, the 500 dollar difference showed up in the mail. No indication on my account it was sent. Oh well, it solved itself.
