Just because you can order a transcript does NOT mean your return has been processed or that a refund has been released or a date for release set.... that is an old wives tale.  Even if you have a date posted the IRS can still stop the refund to audit the return.

The IRS was not going to start processing returns until the 29th and refunds were not expected until 2/7 or later however this government shut down may effect that time table if it lasts for more than a week ....and don't be surprised if things are delayed much longer as the employees play catch up after the time off and begin returning to the job   ...

Do I still have to deal with my taxes?

Of course! Though the bulk of IRS employees have been furloughed (just like they were in 2013 ), you're still responsible for filing your tax return. And if you're expecting a refund, it might well be delayed.

AND the IRS will hold all 2017 tax returns that have a tax refund which includes EIC and/or the Additional Child Tax Credit util mid-February. They will release the tax refunds in late February if there are no errors on the tax return.

Well point all this anger at Congress and demand that the IRS is properly funded so that there are enough personnel to handle the work load they put on them ... did you know that every IRS agent must spend a certain % of their work week answering questions on the phone so they have less time to do their actual jobs (and only about 45% of the calls get answered at all) ... so the next time you call and take up 20 minutes of the agent's time just know you are responsible for delaying someone else's return.

The original letter ( and the next delay letter you will get) are computer generated due to the fact that the IRS has delayed processing your return. Patience will be needed even with the Taxpayer Advocate ... even they must wait for replies from the IRS which can take a week or 2 and you are not the only case they are working.

Sadly the IRS's efforts to stem off identity thefts & increase income tax compliance comes with undesirable side effects.

I'm sure that the people answering the phones are not the same ones working on our taxes. I know my case is not the one they are working on because if that was the case then I wouldn't be on this thread asking questions and see if there were any possible similarities. And Congress does enough to have anger directed at them. But if the statement about the letter is true, then thanks for the new knowledge.. But as a working citizen I just want a good answer that at least states what is going on. So the letter your talking about still has not made its friendly self here in the last 2 months.  And I agree thieves whom Im sure do not work have tried fraud accounts and now its made a mockery of everything.
