Question

Do I have to Amend?

Hello,

On Feb 20th my Federal return was submitted and accepted. I owed $842. Afterwards the IRS made a change that allowed the exclusion of $10,200 of unemployment compensation. Turbo Tax automatically added this to line 8 of Schedule 1. The new calculation shows a refund of $323, however I have not received it yet. When I check the status on IRS.gov they don't seem to have record of the filing. Here is the response...

We cannot provide any information about your refund. Be sure to:

  • verify your filing date;
  • check with your tax preparer or tax software provider; or
  • verify you received your electronically filed acknowledgement e-mail.

If you filed a complete and accurate tax return, your refund should be issued within 21 days of the received date. However, processing may take longer under certain circumstances.

Do I need to re-transmit or file an amendment?

    No just keep waiting.  Did you pay the first tax due?

    If you have filed early before the exclusion, the IRS will recalculate your return for the new 10,200 unemployment exemption for you. There is no need for taxpayers to file an amended return unless the calculations make the taxpayer newly eligible for additional federal credits and deductions not already included on the original tax return.

    Just keep waiting.  The IRS is sending them out in batches over the summer.

    No, I did not pay the pay the first tax due. Thx, I will keep waiting. (I had heard in the media that the IRS was going to issue the adjusted refunds in May, which is why I began to wonder if more action on my part was required … but I’m sure they are quite backed-up)
