Daughter Got Identity Verification Letter?

This is the first time we couldn't claim our daughter as a dependent since she turned 25 last year. She is still in school and made $9000 and filed her tax return using my TurboTax program. Her ID and her two W2's have our home address. She has been listed as my dependent at this same address for 15 years. We are wondering why she has to verify her identity when everything is consistent with the information we've given for all these years. Is it because she is no longer on my return? Is there anyway for her to speak to a real person with the IRS? Thanks guys.

If your daughter received an IRS letter (commonly 5071C, 4883C, 5447C, or 5747C) to verify whether she filed a return, it generally means that a tax return was filed using that SSN/ITIN, and the IRS needs to confirm who it was to prevent fraud. It doesn't necessarily mean that someone else used her number; it may be because she is filing for the first time and no longer a dependent. The fastest way to verify is online at idverify.irs.gov. There should also be a phone number on the letter or other instructions as to how to respond.

Do not respond to unsolicited emails or calls purporting to be from the IRS with no prior contact; only act on the letter.
