Question

CP11 an ADDITIONAL amount, or is it the TOTAL amount due?

I always owe.  Filed in mid-March, but didn't set what I owe to pay until 4/4/2022.  Today is 4/6/2022.  My payment has NOT been completely processed yet.  When I spend 30 minutes logging into the IRS site, it says my payment is pending and cannot give me an account balance.

Received a CP11 before what I have already paid has been processed.  My simple question, which does not seem to exist anywhere on the Interwebs:

Is the amount due on a CP11 an ADDITIONAL amount, or is it the TOTAL amount due?

The IRS sent you a notice after they have made changes to your filed return.

The amount shown on notice CP11 is additional to the amount owed showing on your return.

Please read this IRS document about the CP11 notice.

Interesting.  Thanks for your response.  Without going into too much detail, it's an error on the Child Tax Credit advancement section.  The difference between what I have pending and the amount owed on the CP11 is the identical amount of my Schedule 8812 (advancement credits recv'd in 2021).

Hundreds of dollars.  Not the two thousand one hundred + it says I now owe in addition to my pending payment.  The 2020/21 difference claimed on the Child Tax Credit is exactly the same amount less than 2020.  Meaning I did claim the few small checks I received.

Found what I did.  The child is mine (not my wife's).  I did not add both letters - for my wife, I put $0.

However, again....my miscalculation is identical to the amount on the CP11 minus what I have pending to pay.  This tells me it's the difference, not what I have pending plus the CP11 amount due.

On a CP11, the dollars on the notice are generally the additional tax, penalties, and interest from the IRS change, not a brand-new total that already includes every payment you just made.

So if you have a payment still pending, do not add the CP11 balance on top of that pending payment without reconciling:

Compare the CP11 explanation to your filed return line by line.

Confirm whether your recent payment has posted on the account transcript.

If the CP11 math is wrong (common on credits / withholding), disagree with a short letter and support to the address on the notice rather than just paying the sticker number.

If the CP11 is right, the amount due is the extra assessment; your pending payment may cover part of the original return balance, not necessarily the whole CP11.

A local summarizer can turn the CP11 pages into a checklist if you strip SSNs first. When the notice and a pending payment disagree, genuitech notice help / Second Look is an option.

Not advice for your account. Match the notice ID and tax year before you pay.
