Amending State Return ONLY?

Hi folks,

I neglected to claim about $1200 in deductions on my state return which are not claimable on my federal return (contributions to an Oregon Individual Development Account).

Is there a way to ONLY amend my state return via TurboTax online, or do I have to amend both? When I click "amend" it takes me to federal and THEN state. If not, will this cause any issues with my federal return? I have already filed both my federal and state returns and received my federal refund, so the less messing around with this stuff I end up doing, the better.

Thanks!

Yes, you can submit an amended return for just your state using TurboTax. You may need to wait until the form is available for your state. Form 1040-X for filing a Federal amendment won't be available in TurboTax until February 23, 2023. See here for more information on forms availability for Federal and State forms.

In TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax
  2. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online
    • If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax CD/Download below instead
  4. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your 2022 amended return, select The IRS or state sent me a notice (this will allow you to amend only your state return without making changes to your federal) and Continue
  5. On the next screen, select Something Else and Continue
  6. On the screen Tell us which 2022 return(s) you want to amend, select 2022 state
  7. Continue until the Let's Amend your State Taxes screen. Select Amend next to your state return, and continue through the screens to make your amendments

There are times when you should amend your return and times when you shouldn't. Here are some common situations that call for an amendment:

  • You realized you missed out on claiming a tax deduction or credit.
  • You accidentally claimed the wrong tax filing status.
  • You need to add or remove a dependent.
  • You forgot to claim taxable income on your tax return.
  • You realize you claimed an expense, deduction, or credit that you weren't eligible to claim.

Got it. See, I never would have guessed that, since the IRS and State didn't send me a notice - my IDA provider did - but this is the information I needed. Thanks!
