1040X Line 16 - Source?

Hello.

I am amending my return, and entered the forgotten 1099-DIV which increased my income and taxes.  There is a number showing up on Line 16 on the 1040X, an amount that says I paid with "my extension" or paid with my original filing, or paid after my return was filed.  I didn't pay anything -- I was getting a refund and still am, although a lesser amount (I'll have to pay a little back).  This mystery amount is showing up on the 1040X that I'll need to efile, and it is deducting from the refund amount shown in green - showing it to be more than it should.  Could someone tell me the source of this entry, where I may have entered it in a questionnaire, so I can go back and investigate? I don't believe I did enter anything, but things do happen.  Thanks!

When reviewing the amendment, you should see three columns.  Column A should be your information from your original return, column B should be your changes, and column C should be the difference.  Check which column the information is listed in.  If it is listed in Column B, this would be an entry you made.  You can follow these steps to correct:

    1. Click Deductions & Credits
    2. Scroll Down to Estimated and Other Tax Payments
    3. Review if any entry has been made in the section

If the calculation comes from column A, you can verify the information entered into the original 1040 return.  The area to compare would be Line 17, total payments, and line 18, refund/overpayment.

Thank you for your detailed response, but unfortunately neither of those is the issue.  Line 16 (from the 1040X worksheet) shows this payment on Line B.  But I saved a PDF of my original return and the draft of my amendment, and word searched this number.  It is not on my original return, and is only showing up on the Smart Worksheet 1040X Line 16 B, and then on Line 16 of the 1040X.  I didn't enter it.

Oddly (to me), on the 1040X, Column A changed from my original submission, so I assumed that was due to adjustments TT was making behind the scenes.    In my amendment, I only added 1099 DIV income from one additional source.  The results were that  Column A Line 1 went down from original, Line 4b went up, Line 6 went way up, and Line 15 got zeroed out (but is okay in B and C). There is also a note that says tax liability is QDCGTW on 1040X Line 6 and also on the smart worksheet. Wondering if this other method of calculation changed everything?

    Can you help?  Thanks!

For the form 1040-X  to be correct, column A has to be what was on your original tax return.  Since it is not, I suggest you either start the amended return over or change the entries to insure they match what was on your original return before you enter any adjustments . If line 16 (where you report payments made when filing the return) is wrong, then you can manually change that figure.

We are trying to resolve this issue going forward.  It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2022" file that is experiencing this issue.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:

In TurboTax Online, go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

    1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
    2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
    3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
    4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.

In TurboTax CD/Download versions, go to the black panel on the top of your screen and select Online.

    1. Scroll down to and select Send tax file to Agent.
    2. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click send through this screen and then you will get a Token number.

Reply to this thread with your Token number and use @AliciaP1 to start your responseThis will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on.  Thank you for your assistance!
