2018 W2 for wages earned in 2017

So I received a 2018 W2 from a company I haven't worked for since 2016 and haven't received pay from since 2017. I was able to confirm through review of my refund last year that the W2 is for wages earned during 2017 but not reported in 2017 as they were not on my W2 at the time. My question is, since they were for wages earned in 2017, do I need an adjusted 2017 W2 from my former employer with this information and then amend my 2017 return or since they sent it out on a 2018 W2 can I just include it on this years return and be fine?

You are correct - you should contact the employer and ask for a corrected W-2 form (which will show the wages for 2017) and then amend your tax return.
