Turbotax is asking for the amount on Line 48 of last year's Form 5329, but I did not have one. I had a Form 8889 though. What should I use?

TurboTax is asking if you "overfunded" your HSA in the previous tax year. Actually, what it really wants to know is if you carried over an excess HSA contribution to the current tax year.

If you had excess contributions in the previous tax year but withdrew them all as TurboTax asked, then you "cured" the excess, and you should answer "No" to the question of "Did you overfund your HSA in [the previous tax year]?"

If you carried over an excess to the current tax year, then this amount appears on line 48 of the 5329.

If you don't have a 5329, take this as evidence that you did not carry over an excess. In this case, answer "No" to the question of "Did you overfund your HSA in ][the previous tax year]?"
