When I click "pay SE tax on income and housing allowance", it adjusts the correct amount, when I click continue, it goes back to NOT applying the SE tax. It's a glitch.

There is a glitch with the online program AGAIN this year. Last year I was on the phone with Turbotax for over 5 hours with this same glitch. We eventually figured out the glitch was only with the online version so I downloaded the desktop version and it worked. Now I go to file this year and notice the HEADACHE that they havent fixed the glitch yet. When I click "pay SE tax on housing allowance and income", it adjusts correctly. Then when I submit the W2, it readjusts to not paying the SE tax.  I know this is incorrect and I will get audited. I shouldn't have to avoid the online version because they can't fix the glitch!

TurboTax believes that this is user error. I disagree, and if you used this forum last year I probably corresponded with you because I am pretty much the expert on this problem.

Some customers can clear the problem by deleting their W-2 and starting the W-2 over again. A couple of people report they had to try deleting the W-2 more than one time.

I always recommend installing and using TurboTax on your own computer from a download or CD. It doesn't have the bug, it's much more powerful in other ways, and it's usually cheaper if you buy from a reputable discounter like Staples or Amazon.

@Opus 17 While on the phone last year, after 5 hours, they finally admitted it was their issue but apparently they dont care to fix it. It can't be user error when all I do is click "continue" and then it adjusts back to pre-tax amount lol. I use a chromebook now and unfortunately can't use the desktop version so I'm kinda stuck. Might have to find someone's computer to borrow. I don't want to pay $300 for an accountant.  I will try deleting the W2 a couple times and see if that helps. If not, I'll find a computer to use. Thanks

And what else is weird? When I go back in and manually look through the SE form, it DOES show the exact amount we owe for SE taxes as if it deducted them, yet it didn't.

I don;t quite understand that last.  You can't see schedule SE using Turbotax online until after you pay.  You can check to see if housing is included in the SE calculation by looking at Tools/Tax Summary/Preview my 1040, and look at line 57.  It should be roughly 14.6% of your wages plus housing, it is it, you might be ok, although I would always verify a printed copy of my tax return before transmitting.  If line 57 is only 14.6% of wages, then the SE tax is not correct.

Because you can't examine the forms directly until after you pay when filing online, I would always prefer the desktop program, but especially so in this case.

I talked to someone on the phone and they led me to see the SE afterwards. Im happy to report though after deleting my W2 once and re-entering, it is now showing the correct amoust. Thanks for your help
