Residency status while living in a hotel

I spent less than 6 month living in MD and moved to FL. During my first month in Florida I lived in a hotel and according to my paychex I was still paying MD tax for that month till I finally moved to my new apartment and changed tax information to FL. As far as I understood, I need to file part-year resident form 502, but what about that 1 month when I already left MD, but was not FL resident? Should I specify somewhere that I overpaid some taxes to MD, so I could get more return?

Residency status while living in a hotel

This has to do with the question of domicile.  Your domicile is your permanent home.  The general rule when you move to a new state is that, for state tax purposes,  you maintain your old domicile until you establish a new domicile in the new state.  A temporary residence, such as a hotel, does not constitute a change in domicile.  So paychex is correct that you were still an MD resident for tax purposes during your time living in the hotel.

**Answers are correct to the best of my ability but do not constitute tax or legal advice.
