Why Students Don’t Qualify for the American Opportunity Credit

The American opportunity credit is only available for the first four years of your undergraduate schooling. You are not eligible if you are in graduate school. The lifetime learning credit is a credit against tax owed. If you owe no tax because you don't have income, you  have no tax to be reduced by the credit.
