Can you claim personal property tax on car in Virginia

Personal property taxes that are (1) assessed annually and (2) based on the value of the personal property are itemized deductions for federal tax purposes. You cannot deduct vehicle registration fees (so-called "sticker fees"), which are commonly billed with personal property taxes by the counties and cities in Virginia.

The software is horrible on this matter.  When dealing with Personal Property Taxes the software only mentions planes, boats, and motor homes as examples and exclusively prohibits vehicle registration fees.   The mention of vehicle registration fees further leads users/readers to misconstrue the opportunity to ACTUALLY deduct Virginia Vehicle Personal Property Taxes which are clearly allowed.  They are value-based assessments.  Horrible oversight on TurboTax and it is in fact causing customers to NOT get the guaranteed maximum deduction.  I'm so pissed that I missed this opportunity as a Virginia resident for all these years.  I now need to amend my last three years.  Is TurboTax going to own up to this oversight and/or poor guidance of their customers through the deduction process?

On your Virginia Vehicle Property Tax paperwork you will have a "Net Tax Amount to be Paid" which is fully deductible.   Right after that line will be a "Local Registration Fee" which is not deductible.  Those two numbers make up your "Total Due".   The point is that the TAX portion is deductible.   Take that Virginia "Net Tax Amount to be Paid" subline and enter it in the TurboTax area where they ask about Personal Property Taxes for planes, boats, and motor homes.   Your Virginia vehicle tax (not including the fee amount) should be emphasized as an allowable example, but it is not.

Deduct personal property taxes  on vehicles in the Car Registration Fees interview under Deductions and Credits.

Enter "car registration" in the Search window and select "jump to car registration" from the results.
