Why did TurboTax e-file my Federal return when I selected only to e-file my State return?

This year I had to file a W7 to get an ITIN for my non-resident spouse. I printed and mailed my Federal return with a completed W7. Last week I received my spouse's ITIN and wanted to e-file our State return. On the second to last page of TurboTax's submission process, it asked me which returns I wanted to transmit. I selected State only! TurboTax is telling me both returns were e-filed. I really hope this is only an error with TurboTax's UI and will not delay our Federal return. I did not ask TurboTax to e-file our Federal return. TurboTax should know that I told it to file our Federal return by mail.

Has anyone else run into this issue? I can not contact their support until the weekday. Thank you very much.

Due to security regulations on state tax returns, TurboTax is not permitted to e-file thr state return unless it also e-files the federal return at the same time. You must have made a choice in the program that is different than the choice you thought you were making.

Thank you for this information. I hope it won't delay our return.

Perhaps the second-to-last choice before transmitting your tax returns was related to viewing them? I recall there were two checkboxes, and I unchecked the federal tax return box.

Best regards
