Why can't I select "Blank" for "something other than a date"?

Various it is and then select long or short term holding period. If you have sales that are both long and short term, they should be broken up and entered as all short term on one line and all long tern on the next. 

 

Remember, you are responsible for purchase and sale dates and basis, not the broker. You need to keep records.

Why can't I select "Blank" for "something other than a date"?

On the 1099-B entry you can enter Various.  If your broker did not have the information, they can leave the box blank.  Also, if you sold a block of stock (or similar property) that you acquired through several different purchases, you may report the sale on one row and enter “VARIOUS”.

OK so I'm clear on this:

 

I should enter Various even though the 1099-B was blank.

 

The instructions in Turbo-Tax say I have 2 options - Blank 0r Various but it doesn't allow me to select Blank
