When is stock sale for personal purposes

If you owned the stock and you received the proceeds, then the sale was for "personal" purposes.

 

It doesn't make any difference what you did with the proceeds (gave them away, spent them, saved them, invested them, etc.) - if you received them, then the sale was for "personal" purposes.
