We claim our grandson since we take care of him. It is asking for parents social security number and last name. Do I give ours or theirs since we claimed him?

Enter your social security numbers. If you are in personal information it should be yourself and your spouse. Your tax return will not ask for your grandson's parents social security numbers (SSNs).

You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiancé(e), and so on as a dependent on your 2023 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child:

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.
    • Also see Qualifying Relative if your grandson is older

This may not apply but wanted to give you information about Tie-Breaker Rules as well.

If the program is asking for parents social security number, it's most likely because the "kiddie" tax* applies.

You use the parent's SS# and income. The kiddie tax "rules apply whether or not the child is a dependent. These rules don’t apply if neither of the child’s parents were living at the end of the year."**
