W-4 question for job where I make $32 a week

Hello, my name is Kevin Kennel and I have been working a job since March for 3 hours a week where I make $12 an hour. I am making $31.72 a week and Federal taxes are not being taken out. It is for the in home care agency Comfort Keepers since I am the primary caregiver for my disabled dad. Now, since Federal taxes are not being taken out, should I adjust my W-4 to have a flat rate taken out so I don't end up owing taxes next year?

W-4 question for job where I make $32 a week

Hi Kevin, is this your only source of income? and what is your filing status, like single, Head of the Household, etc.?

Hello! No, this is not my only source of income. I also work part-time at my local library and have taxes taken out of the pay that I make there.
 My filing status is single.

As you are filing as single and also have other job, you need to add up your earnings from both your jobs and see if your total earnings from both the jobs exceeds the amount required to file taxes.

You don't need to file a tax return if all of the following are true for you:

  • Under age 65
  • Single
  • Don't have any special circumstances that require you to file (like self-employment income)
  • Earn less than $12,550 (which is the 2021 standard deduction for a single taxpayer)

If the above is true for you, you may not want to update your W4 as you will not have any tax liability. However, you may still want to file your tax return to claim the refund as your taxes are getting withheld from your job in the library.

If the above does not holds true for you, you should update your W4 with the employer from whom you get higer salary.

Please let me know if you need any clarification on the above or have any additional questions.
