Uniformed service retirement and state taxes

I recently retired from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps. It is one of the uniformed services and we get most of the benefits that the armed forces/military. I am living in Connecticut and it looks like CT does not tax military pensions. Is that correct? I also assume I need to file CT state taxes for any new job income after establishing residency in CT, correct? Thanks in advance.

Uniformed service retirement and state taxes

Hi m-l,

Thanks for participating in today's event!

You are correct: Connecticut does not tax military pensions.

Regarding your second question: generally speaking, you are correct. But whether or not you need to file a CT state income tax return depends on certain factors. Here is a link to the Connecticut State Department of Revenue site: Who Must File a Connecticut Resident Return. Also check out the "Gross Income Test" section.

I hope this information helps. Happy retirement, and I thank you for your service!
