Why haven’t I received an update on my amended tax return after 12 weeks?

Hello, I understand that 12 weeks is a long time!  Unfortunately the IRS is experiencing longer than normal delays this tax season, and project 16+ weeks to process an amended return.

You can check the status of your amended return on the IRS site

Good luck!

Hi lilmissteph,

The IRS is currently several months behind in processing anything that was filed by mail. The "normal" (pre-COVID) quoted timeframe for an amended return to be processed was 16 weeks. Now, due to staffing shortages and the mail backlog, I would add a few months to that timeframe at a minimum. If you mailed your amended return there is likely a delay of 6 months or more before the IRS will be able to open and process it -that's when the 16 week timeframe would start counting.

I wish there were a better answer - I know it is frustrating to wait. Millions of people are in the same situation waiting for the IRS to get caught up.

Once your amended return has been opened and entered into the system, you can track it here:

Where's My Amended Return? | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)

I hope this information is useful!
