This is the first year that we did not get a refund, in fact, we owe a few thousand dollars. Is this typical for most people due to new tax law?

It's not at all uncommon to see that this filing season.

In some cases, this is because of the loss of certain deductions that were previously allowable, or the elimination of personal exemptions.

In other cases, it’s because less money was withheld from paychecks during the year, due to the new withholding tables.
