I work in NY but live in NJ. A friend told me to so NY first and then NJ - so the credit from NY can be credited to NJ - but that is not happening, can anybody tell me what I did wrong?

New Jersey does allow a credit for taxes paid to more than one state on the same income.. Your friend was correct that you should prepare the non-resident state first, then your resident state. Look at your New Jersey tax return for Schedule NJ-COJ. If it is not there, it's likely you may need to revisit your Personal Info section and/or both tax returns. Your New York return should indicate you are a non-resident of that state. Go through the state sections again carefully (reading the blue text links in the software) to make sure everything is entered correctly.
