Tax Return Rejected

Hello,

I've tried e-filing my taxes and keep receiving this error message.

F8889-010 - Form 8889, 'TotalHSADeductionAmt' must be equal to the smaller of 'HSAContributionAmt' or 'HSALimitedContributionAmt'.

Please advise

You probably need to go back to the HSA section and edit your answers.   Make sure that you did not enter any additional amounts for HSA contributions in that section, unless you made contributions in addition to the one on your W-2.   The contributions from your W-2 (code W box 12) are automatically added in, and sometimes taxpayers enter their HSA contributions in that section again.

Revisit the section and then review this help article - Why am I showing an excess contribution to my HSA?   How to get back there:

  • Open (continue) your return in TurboTax. In the search bar, search for hsa and select the Jump to link in the search results.
  • On the screen Tell us about the health-related accounts you had in 2023, check the box next to Health Savings Account (HSA) and select Continue.
  • If you land on Your HSA summary, select Edit, then make sure the Health Savings Account (HSA) box is checked on the next screen and select Continue. If you see the screen Here’s what we have so far, select Done.
  • Answer Yes or No to Did you inherit this HSA?, depending on your situation.

For 2023, the maximum combined total that you, your employer, and/or any other eligible person can contribute to your HSA account is:

  • $3,850 if you're under 55 at the end of 2023 and are covered by an individual (self-only) HDHP;
  • $7,750 if you're under 55 at the end of 2023 and are covered by a family HDHP;
  • $4,850 if you're 55 or older at the end of 2023 and are covered by an individual (self-only) HDHP;
  • $8,750 if you're 55 or older at the end of 2023 and are covered by a family HDHP.

Are you within these ranges?

This is because the IRS has implemented new checks on Form 8889 for 2023 and TurboTax does not report application of a prior-year excess contribution as a current-year contribution the way the IRS expects it to be reported.  TurboTax developers will need to provide a fix for this problem.
