Still waiting for tax documents from Merrill Lynch. I have entered everything else. Can I work on my state tax information and still be able to go back to the federal?

Yes!  You can work on whatever section you want to work on and go back and forth.  Because your state return(s) is driven by your federal, if you work on your state return and then go back to your federal, you should review your state return again before filing.
