So I got married this last May, I have a son (not to the man I married) and my sons Dad and I go every other year. In 2019 I claim my son, do I file married jointly?

Can I file married filling separate to get what I usually get when I claim my child?

Filing married filing separately is generally the worst filing status, especially if you live with your spouse. Without having the ability to look at your tax returns and information, I can only make estimates and suggestions about your tax situations.

However, in my experience I have never seen filing MFS provide a tax result that is more beneficial that married filing joint.
