Self employed home office renovation

I am self employed and work from home. I recently purchased a home (first time homebuyer) and did a major renovation to the home. The renovation includes my home office. Can I deduct a portion of the renovation costs?

Self employed home office renovation

Hello @R-J ! Happy to assist!

If you made a major renovation to your home, this would then be added as an improvement for your cost basis.  You can add this improvement to the asset section when you are entering your home office information.  You can enter the entire amount and then the TurboTax software should allocate the correct percentage to your home office deduction based on the square footage you entered.  This allows you to claim depreciation on the amount of the renovation that included the home office.

Here is some additional information on the home office deduction: Home Office Deduction

I hope that helps and please let us know if you need further clarification!
