Returns were rejected. Says "IRS rejected because dependent has filed their own return." However, my dependent has not yet filed. How do I fix this?!

No code was provided.  The note says to "look for a number in brackets to see which dependent is causing the issue" but I don't know WHERE I should be looking for that info.  Not sure if this is a simple mistake or potential identity theft. Any help is much appreciated!

If you are claiming more than 1 dependent the reject notification has entered a number in brackets which will identify the dependent that has already filed a return.

Review and look for a number in brackets to indicate which dependent is causing the issue. For example: "[2]" will refer to the second dependent from the top.

Hmmm, I don't see that. The rejection notice does not list my dependents with a number in brackets. There is no code and just a generic explanation.

However, I did receive a letter from the IRS today saying someone had filed with my kid's SSN, so at least I now know which dependent is affected and how to proceed.

Thanks for your time!
