I sold all my shares in a partnership this year. Most of these shares had been accrued by dividend reinvestment over many years and therefore any gains can be handled as long term. A small number of shares however were accrued within a year of the sale and therefore should be reported as short term capital gains. Entering the data using the step-by-step method does not allow me to differentiate between short and long term. I can enter the data in the forms version of the Schedule K and K1P additional information but only by overriding the fields. Since the short term shares actually amounted in a loss, it doesn't seem to affect my taxes. However all all the gains/losses are lumped together on Schedule D and listed as a long term gain with Box F checked. I don't know if I'm missing something. Is there a way of entering this information without having to override fields.
