received a 1099-NEC for participation in vaccine study

I receive a 1099-NEC for my participation in a vaccine study.  Turbotax is now forcing me to complete a Schedule C as though this was a small business.  If I go this route, can I claim the mileage deduction from my home to the vaccine lab where the study was performed?  If so, how do I handle the 'Payer's Name/Address'  on the 1099-NEC not being my home address?

You don't have to report this as self-employment income on Schedule C. To enter the 1099-NEC and not create a business return, you would:

In your TurboTax return, go to

  1. Wages & Income
  2. Other Common Income
  3. Select Income from a 1099-NEC
  4. Enter the payer's name
  5. EIN Number
  6. Amount you received
  7. Describe the reason for this 1099-NEC = State what it was for
  8. Does one of these uncommon situations apply?
  9. Click This is not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual,

If you do want to deduct your mileage and enter this as a small business, you would enter the information on the 1099-NEC as shown on the form. The payer is the vaccine lab running the study and you are the payee participating in the study. If you do choose to file this as a small business, you will pay self-employment tax on the income after you deduct the mileage expenses.
