Hi. I live in North Carolina, but I work for several consulting companies throughout the year. Although the companies are based in one state, more often than not, they have me do my actual work in another state. So for example, I worked for one company that is based in Florida, but they had me working in Wisconsin. Do I file taxes for Florida, where the company is based or in Wisconsin where the work was performed?
Thanks!

Income for work that you do is subject to tax by the state where you do the work. It doesn't matter where the company that pays you is located. So if you worked in Wisconsin for a Florida company, you have to file a Wisconsin tax return.
All your income is subject to tax by the state that you live in, no matter where the income is from. So you have to file a North Carolina tax return and report all your income from everywhere. You will get a credit on your North Carolina tax return for part or all of the tax that you pay to other states.

Thank you VERY much. That's extremely helpful!
