Technical Help

I was in the process of reviewing entries on my return and going through anything I missed. I accidentally entered in the wrong amount on one of them and now I don't know how to fix it. On Form 1040, Line 20, I entered 4,719. I'm confused because I had a refund of 4,719 then when I entered that on Line 20, the refund went to 0. I don't think I did that correctly.

Line 16 I'm showing 0.

Line 17 I'm showing 2,929.

Line 18e I'm showing 1,790.

Line 19 I'm showing 4,719.

Line 20 says If line 19 is more than line 16, subtract line 16 from line 19. This is the amount you overpaid.

Technical Help

There is nothing wrong with what you listed. If there is a problem, it starts with line 20.

Line 20 should say $4719, which is your refund, unless you put it on line 22 as well. So, if line 21a also says $4719, everything is fine.

If line 21a says $0 and line 22 says $4719, then you entered your refund as being applied to next year.

Here is how to fix that:

  1. Select Federal from the left side menu.
  2. Select Other Tax Situations toward the top center.
  3. To the right of Apply Refund to Next Year, click Edit.
  4. On the screen that says Apply How Much? clear the box.
  5. Click Continue.
