My dad passed away a few days ago. someone told me i need to file his taxes when i get his w2's. is this true or do i do nothing???? thank you in advance

I am very sorry for your loss.

 

Final income tax returns (federal, and also state, if necessary) should be filed for your dad for the 2020 tax year. However, the returns will not be due prior to April 15th of 2021 (see link below for further information).

You might also want to seek professional guidance if he left assets or otherwise an estate or trust.

This is the job for the executor or personal representative of his estate.

If he has a Will the executor is probably named.

If you are accepting this responsibility, then yes you file his final tax return.

 

If he didn't file for 2019 yet, you need to do that one also.
