Is filing for an extension the best option?

You still have another month and a half till July 15 due date. If it gets close to that then file an extension to Oct 15 and pay any tax due by July 15.
Thanks for the reply. While filing an extension, should I calculate the taxes by counting him as a dependent? That might make a difference as to whether I owe taxes or would be getting a refund at the time of filing for an extension.
Yes. Only pay the tax that you will owe for 2019 when you file, if any. (If you pay a tax and it turns out when you actually file that you did not owe it, then you add it to taxes paid and it will add to your refined.)
