Move and Tax Exemption

Hello,

I just moved to the DC and got a new job at the federal government. I was asked to fill out my W4 form and my tax form for DC. I doing so, I was not sure how to respond to the question of whether I’m exempt from tax withholding both at the federal level and at DC. Could anyone please help me answer this question.
Thanks

Move and Tax Exemption

Hi VenecoManu25, thanks for posting an event question.

According to W-4 Employee's Withholding Certificate 2023, page 2 "Exemption from withholding":

You may claim exemption from withholding for 2023 if

  1. You had no federal income tax liability in 2022 (Form 1040, line 24) or not require to file AND
  2. you expect to have no federal income tax liability in 2023.

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf

Regarding DC, "every new employee who resides in DC and is required to have DC income tax withheld, must fill out Form D-4 and file it with his/her employer."

Congrats on your move and a new job in DC, it is highly likely that you are not exempt, and need to fill out a W-4 form for both Federal and DC .

Hope the above helps. Thank you.
