Premium Tax Credit Married filing Separately as HOH

Filing married filing separately as head of household. Claiming all three minor children. Itemizing deductions. Shared health insurance policy with husband and three children. What is my share of the premium tax credit?

Do I need to pay back the the advance payment? How much? What number should I use for the SLCSP percentage? Thank you for your help!

Premium Tax Credit Married filing Separately as HOH

Both you and your husband need to enter a copy of the Form 1095-A that you received on your tax returns. TurboTax will ask you questions about if the policy was shared with someone and how to allocate the costs and credit.

The percentages that you should enter for your premium, your SLCSP, and your advance payment should be an amount that you and your husband agree on. It could be 50/50 or another amount since you are claiming the children. Make sure you are in agreement and that the percentages on both tax returns add up to 100% together.

We don't know if you'll have to pay back any of your Advanced Premium Tax Credit, but TurboTax will calculate it when you enter your 1095-A. Follow the instructions below.

  1. Login to TurboTax and select Fix my return
  2. Select Fix it now on the Let’s fix your returns and then refile screen
  3. Select Continue on the Let’s take a look at your return screen
  4. Select Federal  on the left menu and Deductions & Credits
  5. Scroll down to Medical and select Show More
  6. Select Start/Revisit next to Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A)
  7. Answer yes, I received Form 1095-A
  8. Enter the information and select Continue
  9. Select I shared this policy with another taxpayer who’s not on my taxes and Continue
  10. On the next screen you will enter the SSN for your spouse and the start and end months that you shared the policy with your spouse
  11. You will also choose the percentages of the amounts you want to claim on your tax return. Find out the amount that you husband entered on his tax return.  Both percentages should add up to 100%
  12. TurboTax will calculate the information that should be on your return based on your answers.
  13. Select File from the left menu and continue to refile your tax return.
