Payments to IRS

When making payments to the IRS when filed jointly, does it matter if I or my spouse makes an account to pay?  In other words, will the amount we owe show up on the IRS page when using my information or does it have to be my husbands? His name is listed first on the taxes….does that matter? I made an account with them but it saids I owe nothing but it also saids it takes 21 day to process the taxes and I just want to make sure that I don’t need him to make an account to see what we owe….if that makes sense.

Yes, the IRS tracks joint returns under the Social Security number of the person listed first on the tax return.

The total due should show under both of your accounts after the return is fully processed, but it will likely show under his account first.

Likewise, any payment you make will be credited to your joint return, but it may take about three weeks for the IRS to connect the dots.

@thisissoconfusing80  All payments must be made under the primary Social Security number to receive proper credit for the payment. The Primary number is the one you used to file your tax return. Estimated payments are due on a quarterly basis.

So if I already requested to make payments under my name, would it be best to do that again but under my husbands so that way there’s no confusion? Also if we do so, can we just start making payments even though it saids we owe nothing yet?

@thisissoconfusing80   yes, cancel any payments using your name and ssn and set them up under the primary members SSN which in your case was your husband.
