Paid Family Leave for California partly paid by employer's insurance

Hi, I went on paternity leave last year for 4 weeks. I was paid 60% of my salary by California EDD and the remaining 40% by my employer's insurance provider. The EDD portion is clearly mentioned in my W2.

Should I select the PFL option while filling the turbotax forms? I see that if I choose it I get a significant refund from California. But I am unsure if I should select that or not.

Please advice if anyone has any suggestions 🙂

Thanks.

If you are indeed sure that 40% of the box 1 amount on your W-2 was from the company's insurance carrier (most companies don't seem to be that organized), then, yes, on the screen immediately you enter your W-2 information, indicate that this is PFL.

Then in the California interview, you will be asked to enter the amount of the PFL (only). Note that the box will be pre-filled in with the entire amount from box 1 of your W-2, but if you read the instructions on this CA screen carefully, you must change that number to only the amount of PFL. This will be subtracted the from your state income.
