TurboTax may have defaulted to claiming your spouse is itemizing deductions when filing Married Filing Separately (MFS) due to an incorrect or accidental selection in the "Personal Info" section of your TurboTax input.

Married filing separately requires both spouses to use the same method (both take the standard deduction or both itemize).

You can go back to the Personal Info tab and find the screen regarding your spouse that addresses this. In TurboTax Desktop, it will say, "We Just Need a Few More Details."  In TurboTax Online it will say Tell us a bit more about xxxx." You can select that your spouse "Will not file a tax return for 2025."

To do this in TurboTax you can:

  1. Click on Search at the top right of your TurboTax screen
  2. Type filing status in the search bar
  3. Click on the link Jump to filing status
  4. Click on edit/revisit  next to your spouse's name
Continue through your screens until you see We Just Need a Few More Details (This will say Tell us a bit more about XXX in TurboTax Online
  5. Check the box for XXXX will not file a tax return for 2025
