I was married in October 2023 and had a baby April 2024. I am making most of the money, $160k from work. We are filing married jointly. How many dependents do I claim?

Newly married and newborn

Hi @Nyna ,

Thank you for joining us today!  And congrats on the new baby!  To complete the W-4, you should review the personal information first.  This would include selecting your filing status.  You state that you will file as married filing joint.  As stated on the W-4, if you are the higher earner it will be more accurate for you to complete steps 3 and 4.  In step 3 you are able to claim the child as dependent.  Please note that only one parent should list the child on their W-4.

I recommend using the W-4 Calculator to get the most accurate withholding.  The more financial information you are able to enter the more accurate the calculator will be.

Thank you!

Melanie, CPA
