My wife Students loan

If you want to pay off the student loan, filing jointly is best as it will give the maximum refund to apply towards the loan. If you NEED your refund, you should file as an "Injured Spouse", form 8379. If she has any refund, it will go towards the loan. The downside is you may lose deductions or exemptions you would have received otherwise.

To include Form 8379 in your tax return, see this article How do I file Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation?
