My son turned 17 in November he made 5000 from his part time job. I claimed him as a dependent. CAN he still have to file his taxes

Your son does not have to file a tax return, as long as he was a W-2 employee, and not an independent contractor with income reported on Form 1099-NEC.  Even if he is not required to file, if he had federal or state tax withheld, he will be entitled to a full refund of those amounts, but must file to receive the refunds.

if he got a 1099-NEC he must file because he'll probably owe self-employment taxes.
